Advancing Sustainable Development: Highlights from the 5th UN World Data Forum

From November 12 to 15, 2024, the city of Medellín, Colombia, hosted the 5th UN World Data Forum, drawing over 3,000 participants from more than 120 countries. The Forum brought together global leaders, data experts, and practitioners to advance sustainable development through innovation, governance, and partnerships in data and statistics.

Key Outcomes: Medellín Framework for Action

One of the Forum’s pivotal achievements was the adoption of the Medellín Framework for Action on Data for Sustainable Development. This comprehensive document outlines twelve new priorities and actions aimed at strengthening the role of data in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It builds upon the foundation laid by the 2017 Cape Town Global Action Plan, addressing critical areas such as:

Data accessibility and inclusivity: Ensuring that all stakeholders, including marginalized groups, have access to reliable and actionable data.

Ethical governance: Promoting trust and accountability in data systems.

Capacity-building: Supporting developing nations in strengthening their statistical and data ecosystems.

The Medellín Framework emphasizes a global commitment to harnessing data to drive evidence-based policy and decision-making.

Engaging Plenary Sessions: Recordings Available

The Forum’s plenary sessions provided a platform for deep, solution-oriented discussions. These sessions, now available online, featured insights from leading experts on topics such as:

Innovation in data systems: Leveraging new technologies and methods to improve data collection and analysis.

Building partnerships: Strengthening collaboration among governments, private sectors, and civil society to close data gaps.

Ethical use of data: Addressing issues of governance, trust, and equity in data management.

Participants emphasized the need for global cooperation to overcome data challenges and ensure equitable progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

A Global Commitment to Action

The 5th UN World Data Forum reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to using data as a driver for sustainable development. By fostering dialogue, collaboration, and innovation, the Forum demonstrated how data can help address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

As we look ahead, the outcomes from Medellín will serve as a roadmap for advancing data-driven solutions and building a more sustainable and inclusive future.
